How should I bring the remains onto the boat?
In Hawaii, there are no strict regulations regarding the container for the remains. While some choose to bring them in a traditional urn, others prefer them already processed. At Captain Bruce, we highly recommend having the remains cremated into a fine powder (ashed) and placed in a water-soluble bag or a biodegradable urn for a smooth and respectful ceremony.
How do I transport the remains to Hawaii?
To prevent loss or damage, we recommend carrying the remains in your carry-on luggage rather than checked bags. Please be aware that customs or airline staff may request documentation. We recommend preparing a “Cremation Certificate” or “Certificate of Pulverization” prior to your departure.
Is there a dress code?
There is no need for formal attire. Please feel free to wear relaxed clothing, such as T-shirts or Aloha shirts. Our goal is to provide a warm, comfortable environment where you can share fond memories of your loved one.
Can I bring beverages for a toast or flowers for the offering?
Yes, you are welcome to bring beverages for a memorial toast and flowers for the tribute. However, we kindly ask for your cooperation with the following:
- For Flower Offerings: If you bring a Lei, please remove the string and scatter only the loose petals into the ocean to protect the marine environment and sea life.
- Flower Baskets: We can also prepare flower baskets for you. Please let us know in advance if you would like to arrange this.
Can we scatter the remains at a specific location?
While we primarily operate in designated areas such as Kaneohe Bay or off the coast of Waikiki, we can adjust the location within the boundaries of Hawaii State Law.
We also offer an optional “Certificate of Scattering,” which records the exact latitude and longitude of the site. If you would like this certificate, please select it from the additional options in the reservation form. It allows you to revisit the same location in the future to pay your respects.
